Big NASCAR Crash at Talladega Ends With 21 Cars Piling Up (W/Video)

Big pileups are nothing unusual in NASCAR, with cars running in tight packs at high speeds as they draft off one another. Yesterday’s Geico 500 race at Talladega Superspeedway was no exception, with a huge crash with only 28 laps to go ensnaring nearly the entire race field.

The trouble began as the pack circled the Superspeedway in a big bunch, with Kurth Busch’s #41 car closely trailing Jimmie Johnson’s #48. Johnson’s car got loose and twisted toward the wall, putting it directly in the path of Paul Menard’s #27 car. The two cars spun to the left into the flow of traffic, setting off a chain reaction that saw a grand total of 21 cars impact as the cars pirouetted and banged each other.

“The No. 41 (of Kurt Busch) was bump drafting me and caused that wreck and just kept hitting me and finally ended up taking me out in the process,” Johnson later told NASCAR.com. “I was trying to stay on top of it and finally he got me once too hard and off I went.”

Johnson finished the race in 22nd place. Brad Keselowski eventually won the race, with Kyle Busch in second and Austin Dillon in third.
