Rumors of a new turbocharged 2.0-liter “Hurricane” inline-four cylinder engine for the redesigned 2018 Jeep Wrangler are all but confirmed thanks to some new spy shots showing a crowded engine bay. Expect the new mill to be a more fuel-efficient option offered alongside the Pentastar V-6 engine.
The new turbo I-4 was spotted in a prototype for the next-generation Wrangler with its hood open. Our photographer says he spotted what appeared to be an oil cap placed in the center of the cam cover in the center of the engine, as well as an air intake routed over the top of the longitudinally-placed engine suggesting a high-mounted turbo. Such a setup would protect a turbo from the elements especially while wading through a deep body of water.
While the new engine will help the off-road oriented SUV meet tightening fuel economy standards, some die-hard Wrangler fans will likely opt for the larger naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 engine. Although the engine is expected to make nearly 300 hp, some concerns include lack of low-end torque off boost as well as non-linear power delivery after boost pressure ramps up. This could prove especially tricky while trying to navigate off-road obstacles at low speeds.
Expect both the new Hurricane four-cylinder and Pentastar V-6 to be backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new Hurricane powerplant could also be the basis for an available hybrid powertrain, which would further improve the Wrangler’s fuel economy numbers. An electric motor option could also help with low-end torque needed for off-road crawling.
