If you were one of the 6,000 buyers interested in the new Ford GT whose application will be rejected, there might still be hope yet. Autocar reports that there might be a future possibility of finding the high-output EcoBoost V-6 from the Ford GT under the hood of small-batch production sports cars.
Speaking with Autocar, Director of Ford Performance Dave Pericak hinted at the idea of the Ford GT V-6 worming its way into other supercars. Initially, Autocar pressed Pericak on the possibility of supplying the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 to other teams and manufacturers for racing applications. He told Autocar “it was a possibility,” and hinted that it was something Ford had already considered.
Adding to that, Pericak mentioned there was “no reason” the boosted V-6 wouldn’t end up “powering a low-volume sports or supercar built by a small firm.” This arrangement could be similar to how GM’s small-block V-8 engines find their way into low-batch supercars.
Autocar points out that the 3.5-liter is already sold in the form of a crate engine, pushing out 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. In the new GT, Ford claims power climbs to over 600 hp, with no specific figure provided yet. Because of this, it wouldn’t be a stretch to see a higher-spec variant of the crate engine in GT tune in the future.
