BMW has revealed the 2017 2 Series lineup, which now gains new names thanks to the addition of new engines. The 228i has been replaced by the 230i, which is powered by a new 2.0-liter turbo-four rated at 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Sitting in between the base model and the high-performance M2, is the M240i, which replaces that M235i and gets a new 3.0-liter turbo-six with 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Coupe and convertible body styles remain available for both the 230i and M240i.
BMW’s new B58 turbo I-6, which is the engine in the M240i and the 340i, features an aluminum crankcase and cylinder head, new acoustic shielding and a twin-scroll turbocharger that’s integrated into the exhaust manifold and electronic waste gate controller. Like its predecessor, the N55, the B58 turbo-six features BMW’s Valvetronic variable valve control system and Double VANOS variable camshaft timing on the intake and exhaust sides. Brake energy regeneration and an auto start/stop function help improve the engine’s fuel efficiency.
Compared to the outgoing M235i, the M240i can do the 0 to 60 mph run in 4.6 seconds with the six-speed manual and 4.4 seconds with the eight-speed automatic. When equipped with the available all-wheel drive system, that time drops to 4.2 seconds, according to BMW. In comparison to the 230i, the M240i comes standard with more performance equipment such as an M Sport suspension that’s 10 mm lower, 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport performance times, M Sport brakes, a variable sport steering system, Ferric Grey metallic side mirror caps, and an aero kit specific to the M240i.
