Now that Toyota is axing its youth-oriented Scion sub-brand, we’ve gathered a list of some of its most notable concepts and show cars. Since its inception, Scion encouraged customers and tuners to modify its vehicles. The aftermarket community has done everything from visual to performance upgrades for every Scion model. Here is a look at some of our favorites.
Scion xD Dalek Art Car
Shown at the 2007 SEMA show, the Scion xD Dalek Art Car turns the four-door hatchback into an open-top speedster covered in gunmetal gray paint with black accents. The xD features extensive custom bodywork accented with a beechwood rear hatch cover. The interior features diamond-tuck leather and additional beechwood accents. Engine upgrades are limited to intake and exhaust modifications. The fancy art car sits on a set of 20-inch alloy wheels.
Scion xB Taco Truck by Kenton Parker
Few things are more popular in Southern California than food trucks – taco trucks in particular. Los Angeles designer Kenton Parker turned the Scion xB into just such a truck for the 2008 SEMA show. The show vehicle features a custom fabricated body housing a complete kitchen with a stainless steel sink, stainless counters, diamond plate floors, a griddle, industrial stove, rear cooking chimney, and more.
Scion xB Tuner by Brandon Leung
What could be cooler than the boxy Scion xB turned into a small pickup styled after classic post-war trucks? Brandon Leung built this Scion xB pickup for the 2009 SEMA show. The custom bed features a wood floor, and the truck has a bright green and white retro paint job. The box pickup rides on an air suspension and sits on a set of 20-inch moonbeam wheels. Interior upgrades include a rollcage and custom Pioneer audio system. Performance upgrades are extensive and include stronger internal bits, intake and exhaust upgrades, a NOS dual-stage nitrous fogger system, and more.
Scion tC Epic tC by Cartel
The Cartel Epic tC from the 2009 SEMA show has been converted into a wild open-top cruiser. Cartel lowered the windshield height and roof side rails while removing the roof, rear window, and side windows for a near-convertible feel. The custom interior features new center-mounted gauges and new seats, while the custom reverse-opening trunklid hides a massive audio system. Performance has been boosted by a TRD superchager, custom exhaust, and limited-slip differential. Custom bodywork, paint, air bag suspension, and 22-inch Vellano wheels round out the modifications.
Scion Rally xD by 0-60 Magazine and Sparco
The 2009 SEMA show also saw the Scion Rally xD by 0-60 Magazine and Sparco. The rally-themed hatchback features a GReddy racing exhaust and a custom B&G RS2 coilover suspension sitting over a set of 15-inch Volk wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich rally tires. Other exterior bits include PIAA rally lights, and carbon-fiber body parts (hood, rear hatch, and wing). Inside, the stripped interior features a rollcage, race seats and pedals, and quick-release steering wheel.
Scion iQ Pit Boss by Cartel
Although it was the smallest car in the brand’s portfolio, the new-for-2012 Scion iQ microcar got big love at the 2011 SEMA show. With plenty of wild modifications, the Scion iQ Pit Boss by Cartel may be our favorite. Cartel turned the small hatchback into a roadster with a chopped windshield and doors. The coolest custom bits arethe tire rack integrated into the rollcage that sits above the SNAPON tool box drawers, and the tire jack storage where the rear hatch area used to reside.
Scion FR-S Cartel Speedster
TRD debuted the Scion FR-S Speedster at the 2012 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Built by Cartel Customs, the custom open-top FR-S features white paint with red graphics and “86” on the doors. In addition to its extensive custom bodywork, the FR-S Speedster has a large carbon-fiber wing out back and custom dashboard with a center-mounted gauge cluster. The red and white theme continues into the interior.
Scion FR-S by GReddy and Scion Racing
When the stock 2.0-liter, boxer four-cylinder engine’s 200 hp isn’t powerful enough for your race car, a Toyota Supra’s turbocharged 3.0-liter 2JZ-GTE straight-six powerplant boasting 750 hp and 730 lb-ft of torque should fit the bill nicely. That is the engine GReddy used for its Scion FR-S entrant in the 2013 Scion Tuner Challenge.
Scion xB Strictly Business by Cartel
Of all the Scion vehicles that have fallen into the hands of tuners, the boxy xB model might have seen the most creative modifications. This Scion xB, aka Strictly Business by Cartel, has been stretched 26 inches to allow for another set of rear doors for a large entryway into the rear seat for two. The rear cabin features custom seating, a custom infotainment system with 27-inch monitor, and onboard Wi-Fi for the Mac Mini computer with touchscreen controls.
Scion FR-S T-1 Targa Top by Cartel
Although a production Scion FR-S convertible didn’t happen, Cartel Customs showed a targa top version of the rear-drive coupe at the 2014 SEMA show. In addition to the removable targa top, the Scion FR-S T-1 featured a two-tone Azzuro California Blue and black paint scheme, rear window louvers, and a wide-body kit. Inside, the concept features black and tan leather. Performance modes include a GReddy turbo kit, KW coilover suspension, Wilwood brakes, and 19-inch forged alloy wheels.
Scion FR-S Super Street FR-S
Our sister publication Super Street brought a Yuzu Yellow Scion FR-S to the Scion Tuner Challenge for the 2014 SEMA show. The custom-painted FR-S features aftermarket body parts from TRD, Rocket Bunny, GReddy, and Seibon. Chassis bits come from KW, Eibach, Whiteline, Wilwood, BBS, and more. Inside, the car features Recaro seats, Personal steering wheel, a Godspeed rollcage, and a Pioneer audio system. The coolest upgrade is the Borla ITB (individual throttle bodies) setup.
Scion FR-S Speedhunters Maximum Attack FR-S
The Speedhunters Maximum Attack Scion FR-S built for the 2014 Scion Tuner Challenge grabbed our attention due to its vintage IMSA racer-inspired livery. Notable exterior modifications include overfenders, a front splitter, rear spoiler, staggered 17-inch alloy wheels, and more. Inside, the race-themed interior features a rollcage and Cobra RS Classic seats with four-point harnesses. The suspension, chassis, and braking systems have also been upgraded. The engine is said to produce 300 hp.
Scion xB Retro Rolling by Riley Hawk
Shown at the 2014 SEMA show, the Retro Rolling Scion xB by pro skater Riley Hawk is the epitome of 1970s custom vans. Retro highlights include orange paint with red, yellow, and brown graphics, round porthole windows, and Cragar alloy wheels. Inside, the custom xB features a wood-grain dash and interior trim, shag carpet headliner, 8-track tape deck, and captain’s chairs finished in brown leather. Modern conveniences include a Pioneer audio system and rear-facing TV screen.
Scion iA Lowrider by Eddie Huang
The Scion iA Lowrider by Eddie Huang features a bright two-tone yellow and gold pearl paint over root beer brown. Classic lowrider details are present including airbrushed designs, gold leaf, pinstripes, and chrome and gold plating. The show car rides of a set of 15-inch gold and bronze spoke wheels wrapped in whitewall tires. Other requisite lowrider bits include a custom air suspension, audio system, and yellow interior accents.
Scion FR-S Concept
Although Toyota had previously shown the Toyota FT-86 and FT-86 II concepts, the Scion FR-S concept signaled a change for the U.S.-market youth brand. It was the preview for Scion’s first sports car and first and only rear-drive model. At 200 hp from its 2.0-liter Boxer flat-four engine, the production Scion FR-S was also the brand’s most powerful car.
