Refreshing or Revolting: 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty

We realize heavy-duty trucks aren’t usually subjected to beauty contests, nor should their designs draw attention away from their hauling and towing capabilities. But since it’s a member of the best-selling vehicle lineup in the U.S., the F-Series Super Duty should look the part. Completely redesigned, the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty receives new cab styling that more closely resembles its F-150 sibling. But has the truck become too civilized for its own good?

The most noticeable change is in the grille. “C-shaped” headlights are very similar to the ones on the F-150. These units replace the square headlights on the previous model. Each headlight on the new model is interrupted by two rectangular blocks that hold the Ford emblem in the center. While the old truck featured a simple square grille, the new F-Series grille adopts a more layered, three-dimensional look.

Looking at the side of the truck, you’ll notice the handles are no longer vertically oriented. While the F-150-like handles look a bit tidier, the same can’t be said for the new fender vents. The old model’s vents, spelling out “F-250” or the names of one of its siblings, were positioned horizontally. Now, the vents spell out the name of the model in a vertical orientation, and honestly, it looks a bit awkward. The cabs are also longer on the new Super Duty models, so you may notice that difference as well.

Out back, the Super Duty receives two clean lines that crease the bottom and top of the bed gate, providing added visual depth. The handle is now positioned at the very top of the gate, and the taillights are bigger.

It’s hard to argue that the new interior isn’t a big step up from the old model. Along with a more spacious interior, the F-Series benefits from improved materials. Ford completely redesigned the center stack and the glovebox. Also notice the new reconfigurable cupholders.

Last week, we took a closer look at the 2016 Toyota RAV4. Comments were pretty much split down the middle.

“Revolting. Toyota can’t seem to strike the balance between bold and stylish,and the rav4 is a prime example,” said Brian Rosado.

But Steve Ameyedoe disagrees. “The headlights and taillights are definitely nice and the stitched leather dash gives it a premium feel.”
