It appears rumors about the Mercedes-AMG GT convertible were correct. Earlier this year speculation suggested a drop top version of the AMG GT would debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show and a new teaser released by the automaker confirms the convertible’s debut.
AMG didn’t hide much in the short teaser video below. A silhouette of the two-door’s side profile is shown, and that’s all we need to see the missing top and the GT’s long hood, short rear deck, and easily-identifiable rear taillights. The video doesn’t show the actual top, but numerous spy shots have revealed prototypes sporting a softtop, similar to the one used in the SLS AMG.
The new convertible should get the same powertrain as the coupe version — a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. It should also mimic the coupe’s GT and GT S variants, with the former making 456 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque and the latter rated at 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. It’s unknown if the convertible will get the GT R treatment, which boosts power to 577 hp and 516 lb-ft and includes a number of performance upgrades.
The convertible is the next step in the expanding GT lineup. Rumors suggest a new GT C model is in the pipeline and is targeted to slot between the GT S and the high-performance GT R variants.
