Compared to the preferences of U.S. buyers, the Chinese auto market is a strange place. Where our buyers in the luxury segment grab SUVs and executive sedans by the boatload, China maintains a strange fixation with long-wheelbase variants of small and mid-sized sedans from Audi, Mercedes, and BMW. In this pursuit, China-owned Volvo offers a long-wheelbase variant of the new S90 sedan, a car that Automotive News reports will make it to our shores in the near future.
Automotive News claims this export was announced by Volvo China sales chief Yuan Xaolin at the Chengdu auto show. When AN reached a spokesperson from the headquarters in Sweden, they told AN in an email that no official decision has been finalized regarding the exportation of the S90.
U.S. buyers are not necessarily known for their love of long-wheelbase variants, so this comes as somewhat of a surprise. Regardless of sales, Volvo seems intent on spreading the long-wheelbase love, as this isn’t the first LWB Chinese Volvo to make landfall in the U.S. The S60 L made its official debut at the 2015 Detroit auto show, and has since made its way to dealer lots.
