cars news 10: Watch a Camaro Z/28 Test Mule Smack Into a Guardrail at the ‘Ring

Just when we finally cleaned the drool off our keyboard from the recent sixth-gen Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 spyshots, a video emerged depicting the track-ready muscle car in action. Unfortunately, the wonderfully guttural soundtrack is cut short when the driver has a brief impact with one of the Nürbugring’s retaining walls.

Initially, the ‘Ring-run goes well, with the Camaro navigating the notoriously treacherous track with apparent confidence. That is, until the Z/28 locks its brakes and skids side-first into a safety barrier on the right side of the track. No injuries were sustained as a result of this collision, and the test mule didn’t sustain too much damage. The front-right quarter panel received a nasty dent, and the two aero canards were demolished.

When the bugs do get worked out, the Z/28 is slated to be Chevrolet’s response to the mighty 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350. No details have spilled yet, but using the last-gen Z/28 as a barometer, the new car should be mental. The powertrain should be a naturally-aspirated variant of GM’s updated V-8 LT family, with a few rumors even heralding the return of the legendary 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 from last generation. The transmission will either be manual-only, or include the optional ten-speed gearbox that made its debut on the 2017 Camaro ZL1.

Underneath the skin, the Z/28 will pack a raft of go-fast chassis components, including a hot suspension, carbon ceramic brakes, lightweight wheels, and active aerodynamics, including a hyper-aggressive rear wing and front spoiler.
