Fiat Chrysler has scuttled plans to build a crossover based on the Chrysler Pacifica platform, reports the Windsor Star. The vehicle was rumored to go into production at FCA’s plant in Windsor, Ontario.
Citing a report from AutoForecast Solutions, the Windsor Star also claims the automaker will continue production of the Dodge Grand Caravan until July 2019. Previously, we heard that production on the minivan had only been confirmed through the 2017 model year. FCA has declined our request for comment.
Marchionne had recently expressed interest in a Pacifica-based crossover. At the Detroit auto show in January, Marchionne reportedly said, “There’s been a lot of discussion, but I don’t have anything to announce” about the crossover. Although we never knew of any official plans for the vehicle, it doesn’t surprise us that FCA was considering such a model. The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica boasts such a flexible platform that it could even accommodate a successor to the 300 sedan.
Lately, FCA has been making big changes to its production lineup. It has delayed a number of new models, including the long-awaited Alfa Romeo Giulia. At the same time, the automaker is looking to find a partner that can build its Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart sedans. That way, FCA can focus on building higher-margin vehicles like trucks, crossovers, and large cars.
