Although our exclusive images of the upcoming Tesla Model 3 (joined by the refreshed Tesla Model S sedan and new Tesla Model X SUV) have already dropped, the automaker says styling for the new compact sedan won’t be finalized for another six to nine weeks, Reuters reports.
“We are currently evaluating, qualifying and selecting our suppliers” for the Model 3, the automaker told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in its report.
On a conference call last week, Musk said final engineering decisions on the Model 3 are still about six to nine weeks out. Tesla wants to avoid the production delays it faced with the Model X SUV, which it says were due to quality and parts supply issues. The company CEO said he wants to have the ability to produce the car completely in-house to avoid delays due to supplier issues.
Model 3 production is scheduled to begin in mid-2017 and the company says it will attempt to meet customer demand for the new model. Even the company’s CEO Elon Musk was surprised when more than 400,000 potential customers put $1,000 deposit down on the future model within days of its unveiling.
Tesla has yet to reveal drivetrain details of the Model 3, but said the new car’s reveal would take place in stages. Pricing for the Tesla Model 3 will start under $35,000 and the company expects an average transaction price of around $42,000 when the vehicle goes on sale.
The EV maker recently announced its goal of producing 500,000 cars per year by 2018, two years sooner than its original target of 2020. In order to meet its lofty production goals, the automaker is working to raise capital to complete its battery Gigafactory as well as prepare its Fremont, Calif. facility to add Model 3 production.
