The 2017 Hyundai Elantra Eco will be the third model in the compact’s lineup, and the automaker recently announced its starting price of $21,485 (including $835 destination fee).
As previously reported, the 2017 Elantra Eco is geared toward fuel efficiency. Hyundai claims the new model returns an EPA-estimated 32/35/40 mpg city/combined/highway and the efforts to reach those numbers go beyond revised aerodynamics or low-rolling-resistance tires. For starters, the Elantra Eco is powered by an exclusive 1.4-liter turbo-four making 128 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission not offered in other Elantra models.
For comparison, the base and range-topping Elantras are powered by a 2.0-liter I-4 rated at 147 and 132 lb-ft. That engine (in the base model) returns an EPA-estimated 29/33/38 mpg city/combined/highway when paired with the six-speed automatic.
The Elantra Eco’s pricing and features place it right between the base and the Limited models, which start at $17,985 and $23,185, respectively. The Eco has a relatively long list of standard features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, blind spot detection, and hands-free trunk opener. Not bad considering a similarly equipped Elantra SE model is only $400 cheaper.
Look for the Elantra Eco to arrive in showrooms by this summer. Other models expected to launch after the Elantra Eco include a sport model and a GT hatchback.
