When the 2017 Ford GT online configurator launched last month, one of the many options available was carbon fiber wheels. The GT is actually the second Ford to get this option (the first being the Shelby GT350R Mustang) and now the automaker has dished out a few more details about the special lightweight wheel option.
As expected, Ford teamed up with Australia-based Carbon Revolution to develop and supply the wheel. The automaker says the wheel is slightly different from the one used on the GT350R for a few reasons. For starters, The GT’s version will employ Carbon Revolution’s next generation of carbon fiber and resin compounds that allow the manufacturer to produce a more stylized wheel. Additionally, the carbon fiber weave will be exposed (finished in either a matte or gloss look) to match the GT’s aero kit. The GT350R has wheels that are finished in black.
According to Ford, the carbon fiber set is 25 percent lighter than the standard forged aluminum wheels (all wheels will be 20 inches in diameter). The reduced unsprung weight will improve handling and acceleration, and Ford claims the carbon set helps with road noise, too. Ford didn’t say how much the wheels will cost, though they should be a relative drop in the bucket compared to the GT’s MSRP estimated to be in the mid-$400,000 range.
