Swiss tuner Rinspeed has released more details on its ∑tos autonomous concept car that will debut at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next month. Based on the BMW i8, the ∑tos is packed with tech including autonomous driving features and a personal drone complete with a landing pad.
Like previous Rinspeed concepts, the tuner turned to a long list of partners to make the ∑tos a reality. ZF TRW, for example, took charge of the retractable steering wheel that disappears into the dashboard when the car goes into autonomous mode. Harman provided the infotainment system, which includes two 21.5-inch widescreen monitors and gesture controls. The system also features a gaze-tracking system that customizes the display based on where the driver is looking. The concept’s connectivity is another highlight, and includes real-time ability to search for parking spots, car-to-x communication, and “on the go” payments for personal transactions.
The on-board drone may seem gimmicky, but the tuner says it acts as a personal assistant capable of retrieving things from the store or taking automotive selfies and videos while on the road. The drone’s landing pad and the roof are made of Gorilla glass sourced from Corning. Other wild features include seats embroidered with San Francisco’s skyline and a paint job with a 3D effect.
