Randy Pobst Goes Over the Racing Line on…The Racing Line

It was bound to happen sooner or later. On the fourth episode of “The Racing Line,” host Randy Pobst teaches us about the very concept his show is named after and demonstrates why it’s the smartest and quickest way around a track.

There are three ways to attack turns and hairpins on a track – the inside line, the outside line, and the racing line. Pobst starts out by breaking down and explaining the racing line, starting with the initial turn-in, to the crucial apex, and finally the track-out. He then hops into a Cadillac ATS-V coupe to demonstrate the racing line, along with the inside line and outside line. Once you’ve mastered the almighty apex, then you’ll want to pay attention to how the racing line affects your tires’ grip performance.

Pobst then moves on to the more technical explanations of the racing line, demonstrated by driving in small- and large-radius circles. He then moves on to trickier turns, including the hairpin, the increasing radius, and the decreasing radius. Of course, all track surfaces are far from perfect. And for those situations Pobst explains the proper way to adjust the line for those pesky mid-corner bumps or off-camber sections.

The video is relatively short, but packed with expert advice. So check out the episode below and remember that it’s ok attack some corners nice and slow.
