All-Electric Citroen E-Mehari Convertible Heading to Production

Citroën’s newest creation is an open-air, all-electric small SUV with funky looks—and best of all, it’s going into production. Called the Citroën E-Mehari, this bizarre new model is meant to evoke the 2CV-based Mehari off-roader made from 1969 to 1988, and will go on sale in Europe next spring.

At first glance, the E-Mehari looks like a modified version of the Citroën Cactus M convertible concept shown at the Frankfurt auto show. The bodywork is a bit different, with extra black plastic cladding for a more rugged look and more upright roll hoops for the B- and C-pillars. The removable roof can be configured in many different ways, with separate panels that cover the front and rear roof sections, and the four-seat interior can be completely hosed out thanks to a use of waterproof plastics and fabrics.Citroen E Mehari profile red top down

As a nod to the original Mehari, Citroën will offer the E-Mehari with the same color selections as the Mehari did in 1968, including blue, yellow, beige, and orange. Buyers can also choose between two different roof colors and two interior colors.

The Citroën E-Mehari is powered by an all-electric drivetrain that uses a lithium metal polymer battery pack. A range of 124 miles along with a top speed of 68 mph mean that the E-Mehari will mostly be used in cities, and the batteries recharge within eight to 13 hours depending on amperage.

If you’re hoping that this uniquely French vehicle will make it to the U.S. anytime soon, don’t hold your breath. Look for more information about the E-Mehari as it makes its official debut in Paris before reaching customers next year.
