Tesla Semi Expected to Start at $150,000

When Tesla unveiled its semi-truck earlier this month, it left out an important detail: how much it will cost. Now, on its website, Tesla estimates a starting price of $150,000.

That price applies to trucks with 300 miles of range. Those who want a Tesla Semi that can travel 500 miles on a charge can expect to pay at least $180,000. A special Founder Series model will cost $200,000. Of course, these prices can change closer to the start of production, expected in 2019.

Tesla’s entry is priced competitively with standard semi-trucks, which can cost between $100,000 and $150,000, as BGR points out. The automaker also touts better reliability, since there are fewer moving parts to break down, meaning lower maintenance costs. Tesla says its electric semi can save companies $200,000 or more per year in fuel costs over millions of miles.

Tesla gave a specific example of how much customers can save with the Semi. On a 100-mile round trip driving at an average speed of 60 mph towing 80,000 pounds, assuming diesel costs $2.50 per gallon and electricity is 7 cents per kWh, the Semi has an operating cost of $1.26 per mile compared to $1.51 for a diesel truck.

The Tesla Semi uses four electric motors derived from the Model 3, one for each rear wheel. Hitting 60 mph takes just 5 seconds unloaded. At max towing capacity, it takes 20 seconds. The drivetrain is guaranteed for 1 million miles, CEO Elon Musk confirmed at the reveal on November 16. Tesla has already secured some high-profile customers, including Wal-Mart and J.B. Hunt.
