Ford F-150: 2018 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Finalist

We Like: The breadth of range from work truck to Raptor, 10-speed auto, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist

We Don’t Like: The aging six-speed auto and placement of off-road button on Raptor steering wheel

Ford ushered in the aluminum-bodied F-150 for the 2015 model year and said, “Patience please.” The remake of the best-selling pickup was just getting started.

Fast-forward to today. The 2018 F-150 lineup runs the gamut from base 4×2 SuperCab XL work truck with a 3.3-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission capable of towing more than its weight to the performance desert Raptor with a high-output 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 that can do a burnout with a trailer attached (but be careful not to accidentally hit the ill-placed off-road button on the steering wheel).

In between is the 4×4 SuperCrew Lariat with the 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 EcoBoost and the new 10-speed automatic transmission developed with GM. “I can’t believe that such a tiny engine can produce this much power,” Miguel Cortina said. “This is probably the one that I would get if it were my own money.” The truck is also available with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, which arrived in time for 2017 TOTY. But for the 2018 competition we also tested the SuperCrew Platinum with the 5.0-liter V-8, which challenged the performance of the Raptor.

We were impressed with the breadth of the changes under the hood. And in the interim, the interiors have gotten nicer, there is a different grille and wheel-tire combo for every taste, the infotainment system is more intuitive, the steering is better, the chassis is stupendous, it has a five-star safety rating, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist makes you look competent at the boat launch.
