Next-Gen Range Rover Evoque to Gain Velar Design Cues

The Range Rover that balked at convention when it debuted in 2010 is about to enter its second generation. When it arrives next year, the new Evoque will feature design cues from the Velar as well as an updated architecture.

Speaking with Autocar, Land Rover design chief Gerry McGovern said the team is considering “how to make the vehicle more modern, precise, more comfortable, more luxurious.” It won’t grow much in size, but the wheelbase will be 0.8 inch bigger to match the new Jaguar E-Pace. The model also receives a redesigned trailing arm suspension setup in the rear, further increasing passenger space in the back.

Updates to the Evoque’s current architecture should help improve ride comfort. Entry-level models are expected to offer front-wheel drive, and higher trims will receive all-wheel drive.

For the 2018 model year, the Evoque received new engines, including a 2.0-liter turbo-four making 237 hp and a more potent version with 286 hp. These units will carry over to the new generation, although fuel economy should improve thanks to engineering updates to the architecture. All engines will come paired to the familiar nine-speed automatic.

The Evoque won’t offer an electrified powertrain at first. But eventually, it could become the first vehicle from Jaguar Land Rover to receive mild hybrid technology early next decade. The automaker has committed to launching an electrified version of every model in its lineup from 2020.

The current Evoque has been a surprising sales success, so it’s likely the new Evoque won’t have to stray too far from its roots. The second-generation Range Rover Evoque will launch at the Paris auto show next October, according to Autocar.
