The automaker that brought us the insane G500 4×4 Squared is at it again with more portal axle madness. On this episode of Ignition, host Jonny Lieberman drives the craziest wagon around: an E-Class that can handle nearly every off-road task thanks to its unique mechanical setup and 17 inches of ground clearance.
Lieberman heads to Untertürkheim, Germany, to take the lifted wagon for a spin through a rock quarry. He puts the one-of-one prototype through what would be ridiculous tasks for any other wagon. From thick mud to steep inclines and highly uneven terrain, the Mercedes-Benz E400 All-Terrain 4×4 Squared doesn’t skip a beat. You barely even feel you’re off-road, Lieberman claims. “Imagine driving over pillows—huge piles of pillows—that’s what going off-road in this thing feels like,” he concludes.
So what exactly is this off-road beast? Essentially, it’s just an E-Class Wagon with portal axles and enormous tires. Due to the success of its other extreme off-roaders, Mercedes plans to put this vehicle into production, when it will receive a brand new engine. The automaker is coming out with an M256 3.0-liter inline-six producing 435 hp, and that’s before AMG tuning.
Watch Lieberman tame dirt roads with this monster wagon in the video below.
