Hyundai has left too many holes in its crossover lineup, and it will spend the next few years remedying this situation. By 2020, Hyundai Motor America will launch eight new or redesigned crossovers in the U.S. These crossovers will cover everything from an A-segment entry to an eight-passenger midsize model.
The first new crossover will be the subcompact Kona, which goes on sale in March 2018. This vehicle will slot above the new A-segment crossover.
Also coming in 2018 is a new fuel cell crossover. Along with gas-powered crossovers, Hyundai will roll out an electric crossover (Kona EV?) and a diesel crossover by 2020. Hyundai says it will become the only automotive manufacturer offering four different fuel choices in its crossover lineup.
Expect Hyundai’s new crossovers to debut at major auto shows in Detroit, New York, and Los Angeles.
As we previously reported, Hyundai will introduce an E-segment SUV that will sit on its own platform. The exact timing of this model is unclear, but it will be larger than the Santa Fe.
Hyundai’s sales have suffered as the result of not introducing enough crossovers. “Our sales plan has suffered a setback, but we will use this as an opportunity to overhaul our products,” Hyundai Motor company vice chairman Eui-san Chung told us earlier this year. “It is an opportunity to review our product line and take another new leap forward.”
Hyundai is also looking to launch the Santa Cruz pickup, likely by 2020. The model shares the same platform as the Tucson.
