2018 BMW M4 CS Takes on 2018 Porsche 911 GTS on Head 2 Head

The BMW M4 (along with its four-door M3 sibling) debuted to a lukewarm reception in 2015. BMW later launched a Competition package that addressed some criticisms of the base M4, and then a CS variant that heightened the car’s performance even further. The 2018 BMW M4 CS now offers a driving experience worthy of the M badge, but can it hang with the gold standard of sports cars, the Porsche 911? Hosts Jonny Lieberman and Jethro Bovingdon find out on this episode of Head 2 Head.

The particular 911 model they choose to take on the M4 CS is a 2018 Carrera GTS, which costs more than the M4 but sits right in the middle of the 911 range. The M4 CS makes 454 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque from its twin-turbo 3.0-liter I-6, which is just 10 hp more than an M4 Competition Package but 36 lb-ft more torque. Meanwhile, the 911 GTS makes 450 hp and 405 lb-ft from its twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six. Both cars have seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions and are rear-drive. Despite one being front-engine and the other being rear-engine, the cars seem pretty well matched on paper. Proving they have the toughest jobs in the world, Jonny and Jethro have to fly all the way to Germany’s Nürburgring to see how the cars stack up.

The M4 CS feels right at home on the ‘Ring thanks in part to grippier standard Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and an improved chassis. But as good as the CS is, the 911 goes around the track more quickly and more smoothly. You’d think Germany’s most famous race track would give the hosts the info they need to choose a winner, but they decide they need some seat time on a good winding road—in the Austrian Alps. Which car will they crown the winner of this H2H? Find out in the episode below.
