Hyundai announced that it will expand the i30 range beyond the standard hatchback to include a wagon, high-performance N model, and a fastback. The question is: Will the Elantra GT receive the same treatment, and would we want it to?
The current Elantra GT is based on the last-generation i30 that’s sold in Europe. An all-new i30 boasts a number of updates that could arrive on a future Elantra GT in the U.S., including a new front fascia with a dramatic “Cascading” front grille. The i30 also receives plenty of standard safety tech including automatic emergency braking and smart cruise control, as well as a brand new 1.4-liter turbo-four producing 138 hp. The engine also pumps out 48 percent more torque compared to the 1.6 GDI engine.
The first model in the range to come out is the five-Door model. Hyundai says it will debut a wagon version of the i30 at the Geneva Motor Show in March. In the second half of the year, the automaker will introduce an N-variant with performance upgrades. Finally, in the beginning of next year, a fastback variant will roll out.

An Elantra GT wagon could compete in the growing small wagon market, which includes the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen. A fastback would be an interesting choice, given there are few competitors in the field. Would you like to see the Elantra gain three new variants, or do you think these options are best left to Europe? Let us know in the comments below.
