cars news 10: Ford SmartLink Brings Connectivity Features to Older Models

Ford is rolling out SmartLink, a technology that brings connectivity features to vehicles not equipped with a modem access. Owners of 2010-2016 Ford and Lincoln vehicles can add 4G Wi-Fi, remote start, and other key features to their vehicles by plugging in one simple device.

Beginning this summer, drivers can head to Ford and Lincoln dealerships to receive the SmartLink device. Once the device is plugged into the OBD II port below the car’s steering wheel, drivers will be able to locate their vehicle in a parking lot, receive health and security alerts, schedule service appointments, and utilize 4G Wi-Fi hotspot capable of connecting up to eight devices. The device also enables remote start, locking, and unlocking with the compatible smartphone app.

Collaborating with Delphi Automotive and Verizon Telematics, Ford said it took two years of research and development to perfect the SmartLink technology. “From security to performance, we’ve conducted extensive testing and made a number of improvements to ensure Ford SmartLink enhances the customer experience for our owners,” said Raj Nair, Ford’s executive vice president of Global Product Development and chief technical officer, in a release.

The Ford SmartLink roll out is a pretty big step for the industry in bringing new technologies to older cars. Earlier this year, Fiat Chrysler added Siri Eyes Free capability to late-model vehicles through a Uconnect software update.
