Just weeks after Audi debuted the Q8 concept at the Detroit auto show, our spy shooters have captured a Q8 prototype testing alongside a Q7. Though it’s still heavily camouflaged, we can make out a few differences between the Q8 and its platform-mate.
The first thing that stands out is the more raked C-pillar, the design feature that gave the concept its attractive fastback SUV shape. We can also see a headlight and grille arrangement that’s slightly different from the Q7’s. The headlamps are slimmer and the grille is wider just like the concept. In addition, the intakes in the lower valance also match those of the concept. This mule unfortunately doesn’t have the show car’s striking full-width taillights, but hopefully those make it to production. Looking at the two SUVs side by side, you can also tell that the Q8 rides lower than the Q7 and is slightly wider.
As we reported previously, the Audi Q8 is bound for production sometime in 2018. The full powertrain lineup is still unknown, but the e-tron concept featured a plug-in hybrid system comprised of a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and an electric motor that produce a combined 443 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. That power is transmitted through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It’s possible other drivetrain options, likely borrowed from the Q7, will also be offered.
