New Garmin GPS Unit Caters to the RV Enthusiast

Opting for a navigation system seems almost redundant these days. If you have a smartphone and a strong enough cellular signal, you have navigation. But for those that spend a lot of time beyond the reach of cell towers, dedicated GPS nav systems are still attractive. All standalone GPS devices have the capability to navigate you through the vast wireless dead zones you find in the wilderness, but Garmin’s latest unit caters specifically to outdoors aficionados and RV owners.

Garmin recently announced the RV 770 LMT-S, the latest in its RV series specially designed for camping enthusiasts. The new model comes preloaded with a comprehensive directory of RV parks that can be filtered by amenities such as electric hookups, onsite water, and internet access. Ratings compiled from TripAdvisor data help drivers choose campgrounds and other businesses. The unit also features real-time traffic and weather updates, and can provide RV-specific alerts about bridge height, steep grades, sharp curves, and weight limits. In addition, the new GPS device can warn of possible fatigue after you’ve been driving for a while, and will ask if you’d like directions to the nearest rest stop or restaurant along your route. Relatives interested in how your trip is going will appreciate the LiveTrack feature, which lets drivers share their location.

The RV 770 LMT-S’ screen measures nearly 7 inches edge to edge, and is compatible with Garmin’s BC Wireless Backup Camera. The unit comes with Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling, though maps and other data will have to be updated via Wi-Fi. Garmin says its latest RV navigation system is expected to be available in February for $399.99. Not cheap, but having all that info in one device could be worth it for RV drivers.
