The Mopar name has become a catchall term to describe any muscle car under the Chrysler Group umbrella, but what is today a parts and service brand offering more than 500,000 products in over 150 markets began life as a line of antifreeze. That brand turns 80 years old in 2017, and is celebrating its history with a display at the Detroit auto show and much more throughout the year.
A contraction of the words motor and parts, Mopar was the name for a line of antifreeze products specially designed for Chrysler vehicles that was introduced in 1937. By the 1960s, Mopar became synonymous with Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth performance. Today, Mopar operates more than 50 distribution centers and 25 customer contact centers globally.
To mark the milestone anniversary, FCA is planning to launch limited-edition models throughout the year, and offer 80th-anniversary-themed service to customers. In addition, there will be special events starting with the Detroit auto show that runs from January 8-22. There, the brand will celebrate its 80th year with a special Mopar Garage display.
We’ll have to wait to find out exactly what Mopar has in store for its 80th birthday, but to get fans in the mood the brand released several vintage ads and logo designs from its past. Check them all out in the gallery below.
