Chrysler Portal Concept Debuts Ahead of CES

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has become the venue for automakers to debut their latest tech- and buzzword-intensive concepts. For proof of this, just look at Fiat Chrysler, which chose CES instead of its hometown auto show in Detroit to debut the Chrysler Portal concept, a minivan-like, semi-autonomous electric vehicle geared toward millennials.

Chrysler says the Portal concept gives us a look at the fifth generation of family transportation, meaning the next-gen Pacifica will likely take cues from this futuristic-looking people hauler. The design features pillarless openings to the cabin with articulating front and rear doors, which use glass on both the top and the bottom.

Like many other concepts designed with autonomy in mind, the Portal was conceived from the inside out, with a major focus placed on interior space and functionality. A 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack is placed beneath the floor to free up space in the cabin, and there’s also a simplified dashboard with a wide display screen and airplane-style steering wheel. Unlike other concepts we’ve seen, the Portal isn’t fully autonomous, so the wheel stays right where it is, allowing the driver to take control if necessary. Chrysler says the Portal offers Level 3 autonomy initially, but can be upgraded to Level 4 later.

Despite not offering full self-driving capability, the Portal is equipped with onboard Wi-Fi and social media integration with mobile devices so passengers stay connected on the go. The rear two rows of seats slide on a track system, and can be folded flat or removed if needed. The cabin features up to 10 docking stations in the instrument panel and seats that can be used to secure and charge mobile devices.

Chrysler estimates its Portal concept will have a range of more than 250 miles on a full charge, and that 150 miles of range can be restored in less than 20 minutes using a 350-kW DC Fast Charger. FCA sees potential for the Portal to be used in ride hailing and commercial applications in addition to use as personal transportation.

The Chrysler Portal concept will make its debut at CES later this week. What do you think of FCA’s vision for the people-mover of tomorrow?
