“Cars 3” Will Be About Lightning McQueen Getting His Mojo Back

The first full trailer for Disney-Pixar’s upcoming “Cars 3” has dropped, and in it we learn a lot more about the next installment in the animated franchise.

In the teaser trailer, released in late 2016, we saw the movie’s protagonist Lightning McQueen take a bad spill during a race. The short clip ended with a foreboding message that promised “everything will change” after that incident. We now know that “Cars 3” will be a comeback story detailing how McQueen recovers from his accident and trains for a rematch with the film’s antagonist, Jackson Storm. We previously thought that character was a pure electric vehicle, but a second video reveals that Storm is actually a hybrid described as being “part of the next generation of high-tech racers.”

“Cars 3” looks like it could have a story structure similar to that of the original, with McQueen needing to learn a different approach to racing in order to beat his opponent at the end. In this case, the character must overcome his own technical shortcomings and feelings that he may be past his prime. In one scene, an unidentified voice says, “You’ll never be as fast, but you can be smarter.” This could be a new character to replace Doc Hudson (who was voiced by the late Paul Newman) as McQueen’s mentor.

One character that we do know about is Cruz Ramirez, a young sports car that appears to help train McQueen at an abandoned circle track. At various points in the trailer, we see McQueen practicing on the deserted track and racing in what appears to be a demolition derby, perhaps in an attempt to get his mojo back.

We were excited about “Cars 3” before, but now June 17 can’t come soon enough. What are your thoughts on the next film? Watch the trailer and the videos introducing Jackson Storm and Cruz Ramirez below and tell us what you think in the comments.
