Watch Carlos Lago Flog a Ferrari 488 Spider on New Ignition

When you take the top off a sports car, usually that means giving up rigidity and adding weight. But on this episode of “Ignition,” Carlos Lago returns as guest host to argue that you don’t really sacrifice anything when you buy a 2016 Ferrari 488 Spider.

Yes, the drop-top version weighs about 100 pounds more than the 488 GTB, which contributes to a half-second slower 0-125 mph time. But as Lago says, “Who cares?” The important thing is how the car drives and makes you feel, he argues. And based on the 488 Spider’s specs, it should be nearly as thrilling as the coupe. The Spider receives the same 661-hp, 561-lb-ft twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 as the 488 GTB, and is backed by the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The body even scored as highly as the coupe in Ferrari’s wind tunnel testing, thanks to an integrated lower wing up front, the same ducting in the rear fenders that allows air to pass through and exit out the taillights and trunk, and an F1-style drag-reduction flap ahead of the rear diffuser.

When you push it, you realize that the 488 Spider is a serious sports car, with limits too high to explore outside of a race track. Still, the car is easy to drive on the street thanks to a large-diameter steering wheel that takes the effort out of steering and a comfort setting for the dampers.
