Volkswagen recently revealed the refreshed Golf lineup, and now it’s showing off the updated all-electric 2017 e-Golf. In addition to getting those same subtle design changes, the e-Golf gets more power and significantly more range.
The 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf receives a new lithium-ion battery pack that increases capacity from 24.2 kilowatt-hours to 35.8 kWh. That increases the range 50 percent from the current 83 miles to 124. The e-Golf now comes standard with a 7.2-kW onboard charger, and DC Fast Charging capability comes standard on the SEL Premium trim and is still available as an option on the SE. Models equipped with DC Fast Charging can recharge to 80 percent in about an hour.
The e-Golf also gets a slight bump in power, increasing 19 hp and 15 lb-ft of torque to 134 hp and 214 lb-ft. Endowed with more power, the 2017 e-Golf is estimated by Volkswagen to hit 60 mph in 9.6 seconds and go on to a top speed of 93 mph.
Inside, the e-Golf can be equipped with an optional 9.2-inch touchscreen that was previewed by the e-Golf Touch concept earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show. The unit features gesture control and runs VW’s new MIB III infotainment system, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new e-Golf will have the option of a driver-configurable 12.3-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit gauge display, similar to Audi’s Virtual Cockpit.
The e-Golf’s available advanced driver assistance systems benefit from greater range and capability, with Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking gaining pedestrian monitoring.
The 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf will be the first model to receive the Golf range updates in the U.S. when it goes on sale in the second quarter of 2017.
