Thanksgiving Traffic This Year Will be the Worst Since 2007

We have many things to be thankful for this holiday season, but record traffic isn’t one of those things. AAA predicts the worst Thanksgiving traffic since 2007, with 48.7 million Americans traveling 50 miles or more between today and Sunday – and most will be driving.

The numbers represent a 1.9-percent increase from last year. AAA attributes the uptick in travel to cheaper gas and improvements in the economy, which include increased wages and more consumer spending. The auto club estimates American drivers have saved more than $28 billion on gas so far this year compared to 2015. That helps explain why 1 million more people are traveling for Turkey Day.

More than 89 percent of travelers, approximately 43.5 million people, will drive to their holiday destinations, while 3.69 million will fly. Many will head west, with the top three destinations being Las Vegas, Nev., San Francisco, Calif., and San Diego, Calif. Other popular cities include Orlando, Fla., New York City, and New Orleans. Thanksgiving is the latest holiday to see record traffic this year, following high volumes for Memorial Day and Fourth of July.

So if you’re heading home for Thanksgiving, you may have to wait a little longer than normal before you can stuff your face.
