Crashing your car into a ditch is bad enough, but crashing a $2.5 million Bugatti Chiron into a ditch is even more unfortunate. This scenario came to life in Germany, apparently because someone wasn’t paying attention behind the wheel.
“The driver was unfortunately a little inattentive, which is why the car landed in the road ditch,” Manuela Höhne, a Bugatti spokesperson, told Bild, a German tabloid. Bugatti says no one was hurt in the accident.
Making the scene even more odd, the Chiron was rescued by a construction vehicle instead of a conventional tow truck after the accident. Since the crash took place in Wolfsburg, Germany, the headquarters of Bugatti’s parent company Volkswagen Group, it’s possible that the driver was affiliated with the automaker. But the identity of the driver, and the exact circumstances of the accident, remains unclear.
Perhaps the driver found the Chiron was too hot to handle. Packing a 8.0-liter W-16 engine, the successor to the Veyron is capable of hitting 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 261 mph. Bugatti only plans on making 500 copies of the Chiron, so the loss of this bad Bug is sure to take a bit of a toll on the automotive ecosystem.
This isn’t the only horrible incident to befall a Bugatti supercar and its driver. Several years ago, a Texas man crashed a Veyron into a lagoon in a suspected attempt at insurance fraud. The man later pleaded guilty to fraud and ended up in jail.
