cars news 10: Refreshing or Revolting: 2017 Mazda CX-5

Mazda’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S. receives fresh new sheetmetal for the 2017 model year. The CX-5 enters its second generation, despite having been refreshed for 2016 and originally introduced to the U.S. market for 2013. Is the 2017 CX-5 a refreshing new take on the original model, or did Mazda do it better the first time around?

The CX-5’s face, once friendly and unassuming, is now aggressive and even a bit menacing. Mazda slimmed down the headlights and connected them directly to the grille, which is also completely new. The old model featured a V-shaped opening, but the new CX-5 gets a more ovular five-point inverted grille. Chrome accents enhance the new grille frame, and the front bumper is now more sculpted.

Looking at this crossover from the side, you might find the CX-5 looks more planted. The automaker lowered the center of gravity on the CX-5, also pushing back the A-pillars just slightly. In terms of length, width, and wheelbase, the new CX-5 is sized very similarly to the old model. But from this angle, it appears as if the rear end is less pronounced. Chrome details surround the windows, and the body cladding is more subtle, adding a bit of refinement.

Just like in front, slimmer lamps adorn the back of the vehicle. You’ll notice the body cladding doesn’t come up quite here as high as on the previous model. Overall, the rump adopts a squarer shape compared to the old CX-5.

Inside, the center display now sits atop the dashboard. The center console in between the seats is taller, and the shift knob has been positioned for better reach. Also notice the new seats; rear seats receive a new two-step reclining mechanism and cushions that contour to the passenger’s body. Other goodies include a new head-up display and a floating high-resolution 4.6-inch color TFT liquid crystal unit to the right of the instrument cluster.
