“The Grand Tour” Sets First Stop in South Africa

We got our first taste this week of the new “Top Gear” hosted by Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc, and it left us with the deep sadness that the original three—Clarkson, Hammond, and May—would never be played in by the Allman Brothers’ “Jessica” again. The new series has its work cut out for it, not only because they’re inheriting one of the biggest commercial TV properties around, but fans have been very vocal about their displeasure with Evans as its new host.

Fret not, for soon Hammond, Clarkson, and May will return to your TV screens when their new Amazon-hosted show debuts this autumn. The Grand Tour is set up closer to the old “Top Gear” specials, in which the three hosts traverse long distances in either cars woefully inept for the task at hand or in lustworthy supercars on some of the best driving roads imaginable.

We’ve had glimpses and teasers of the new show from the trio, but we haven’t received any real information until now. According to “The Grand Tour’s” Twitter feed, the show’s first stop will be in Johannesburg, South Africa. Little beyond the location is known about the trip, including which cars the three will be driving and where they’ll be going from Johannesburg.

After “Top Gear’s” meltdown last year, we’re all eager to see if the same level of energy, wit, and irreverence that made it the biggest TV show on the planet is retained by the three personalities. Our hopes are high because new “Top Gear” doesn’t look as if it’s going to last as long as its predecessor. At least not yet.
