Trump Considering Ex-Ford CEO Alan Mulally for Secretary of State

Alan Mulally, who steered Ford away from bankruptcy and toward record profits as CEO, is currently under consideration for the position of secretary of state.

President-elect Donald Trump met with the former Ford CEO on Thursday to discuss the position, campaign manager Kellyanne Conway confirmed to Fox News.

After more than three decades at Boeing, Mulally joined Ford in 2006. During his tenure, he sold off Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Ford’s interest in Mazda, and closed the Mercury division. In the economic downturn, Mulally kept Ford together without taking federal loans and changed the company inside and out, globalizing new vehicles and improving the lineup with more fuel-efficient offerings. After he left Ford in 2014, Mulally served on Barack Obama’s Export Council to advise the president on trade.

The news is an amusing turn of events, given Trump’s previous kerfuffles with Ford. But Mulally is just one name on a long list of other high-profile candidates for secretary of state, including former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, former CIA Director David Petraeus, former  U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, California Representative Dana Rohrabacher, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, and Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson. Another big name is former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was a close advisor to Trump during his campaign.
