cars news 10: Lucid Partners With LG Chem on Battery Cells

Earlier this month, Lucid Motors announced a battery partnership with Samsung. Now, the automaker says it has also formed a supply agreement with Samsung’s rival, LG Chem.

Battery cells from both suppliers are set to make their way to Lucid’s first vehicle, the Air. But the cells can also be used for other purposes, including batteries Lucid supplies to other companies and variants of its new sedan that have unique performance requirements. “The differing performance attributes available from the two cell suppliers provide Lucid with maximum flexibility to select the best cell for each application,” Lucid said in a press release this week.

More than 20 automakers around the world rely on LG Chem as a supplier. That includes General Motors, which uses LG Chem battery packs on the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt. Faraday Future has also teamed up with LG Chem, a collaboration which the automaker says will yield the “world’s highest energy density for a production automotive battery.”

Meanwhile, Lucid is promising “best-in-class energy density” for its battery packs. Incidentally, Audi is also using cells from both LG Chem and Samsung to help power a new all-electric crossover promising more than 310 miles of range.

Last week, Lucid revealed its first EV that is scheduled to hit production in late 2018. The battery pack inside this new car can support 1,000 hp and a range of up to 400 miles on a single charge, Lucid claims. It took 10 years to develop the battery pack, which is said to be optimized for repeated fast-charging.
