By this spring, BMW will have added a plug-in hybrid model to its 5 Series lineup. According to BMW’s estimates, the 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance should be just as quick as the 530i.
Under the sheetmetal, the 530e packs a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four producing an estimated 180 hp and 215 lb-ft of torque. With the help of a 9.2-kilowatt-hour battery and a 95-hp electric motor, the sedan achieves a total system output of 248 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque (matching the smaller 3 Series plug-in). Buyers can choose between rear- or all-wheel drive, but every model comes paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW estimates a top speed of 130 mph and a 0-60 run of 6.1 seconds, nearly matching its time estimate for the entry-level rear-drive 530i. All specifications at this point, however, are preliminary, BMW notes.
BMW says charging the 530e takes 7 hours from a residential 120V outlet. Upgrading to a 240V outlet reduces the charging time to less than 3 hours. As of this writing, BMW has not yet listed fuel economy information, or provided an all-electric driving range estimate.
It may be difficult to notice, but the 530e offers unique styling elements. Blue kidney grille slats, blue wheel hub covers, and special badging help set the model apart from the rest of its 5 Series siblings. Not to mention the charging receptacle located just in front of the driver door.
Inside the cabin, the 530e is pretty much like any other 5 Series. It benefits from a 10.25-inch iDrive Display and offers optional gesture control technology. BMW says the model offers the full use of trunk space and a flat load compartment floor thanks to the battery’s position underneath the rear seat.
The 530e is the fourth member of the iPerformance model line of plug-in hybrid vehicles in the U.S. It joins the 330e, 740e, and X5 xDrive40e when it goes on sale in spring 2017. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
