cars news 10: McLaren Builds its 10,000th Supercar

Five years ago, McLaren delivered its first production road car since the much-beloved, but highly-exclusive F1. And in terms of development cycles, five years isn’t that much time, especially when you consider that McLaren has launched not one, not two, not even three cars, but a total of five separate models. It appears that the British-based supercar builder doesn’t sleep, and it isn’t stopping that growth anytime soon as it recently produced its 10,000^th supercar.

According to incoming McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt, “The production of the 10,000^th McLaren is a significant milestone in the short history of the company. The fact that it took us 42 months to build our 5,000^th car and just 22 months to build the next 5,000 speaks volumes about the pace of development of the company.”

The 10,000^th car was one of McLaren’s newest offerings, a brand new 570S. The supercar, part of the company’s Sports Series, uses the same carbon fiber monocoque chassis as the 650S, 675LT, and 570S, as well as the same twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-8 found in the entirety of the McLaren lineup.

McLaren also stated that the company recently had to add a second shift on the production line at the McLaren Production Center to “accommodate the increase in orders after the introduction of the Sport Series family,” which includes the 540C, 570S and 570GT, doubling the pace from 10 to 20 cars built per day.

While the 570S is undoubtedly in hot demand, and McLaren could likely charge a premium for such a historically significant example, this car will stay with McLaren and be preserved in the company’s Heritage Collection. And while not in the press release, McLaren is hard at work on creating the next car for both the company’s Super Series and Ultimate Series, replacing the 650S, 675LT, and P1 hypercar.
