GM Announces Staff Cuts for Detroit-Hamtramck Facility

General Motors will lay off 1,300 workers at its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant starting in March as a result of production cuts to a number of models with a surplus of inventory.

As previously reported, GM is suspending production at Hamtramck for three weeks next month. Then in March, the automaker will eliminate one of two production shifts altogether, Automotive News reports.

The Detroit-Hamtramck facility currently builds the Chevrolet Volt, Impala, Cadillac CT6, and Buick LaCrosse. According to the report, GM started the month of December with a 111-day supply of the CT6 and a 168-day supply of the LaCrosse. The Detroit News reports that through November GM’s total inventory was approximately 874,000 units, enough for an 87-day supply of vehicles. Industry analysts suggest a 60-70-day supply is healthy.

GM trucks and SUVs continue to sell well with lower supplies. That said, the automaker suggested employees displaced from Hamtramck could be relocated to busier plants.

AN obtained a letter GM wrote to Hamtramck staffers stating that “it is possible that placement opportunities in other local GM plants may be available for most, if not all, of the affected GM employees.”

GM will also reduce staff and production shifts at its Lansing Grand River facility, which currently builds the Chevrolet Camaro and Cadillac CTS. Same goes for its Lordstown, Ohio plant where the Cruze is produced.

Plants slated for production shutdowns but not staff cuts are Fairfax in Kansas (closed for three weeks) and Bowling Green in Kentucky (closed for one week).
