Long-Wheelbase Volkswagen Tiguan Teased Ahead of Detroit Debut

Volkswagen is in the unenviable process of brand reinvention, and with this reinvention arrives a future laden with VW-branded SUVs and crossovers of all shapes and sizes. Following the debut of the midsize Atlas crossover earlier this year, the automaker has announced that a second three-row SUV, an extended-wheelbase variant of the compact Tiguan, will join the lineup this coming summer after making its first appearance at the 2017 Detroit auto show.

Dubbed “Tiguan Allspace” in Europe, it will be known as just Tiguan in the U.S. and China, an indication that the existing Tiguan will be discontinued outside of its home market.

Though details are scarce, Volkswagen did say that the Tiguan’s wheelbase is being stretched by 4.3 inches and will offer seating for up to seven. The automaker is also promising more room and greater interior flexibility.

Power is expected to come from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor, sending power to the front or all four wheels through VW’s eight-speed automatic transmission. Presently, the Tiguan is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder, shipping power to the wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

Look for more info on the new, longer Tiguan closer to the 2017 Detroit auto show in January.
