Rolls-Royce Cullinan Shows Off its High-Sided Body

Rolls-Royce today provided an update and two new photos on its Project Cullinan–and yes, Rolls is still reluctant to call it an SUV.

That said, the automaker says development of its “all-terrain, high-sided vehicle” is going as planned. And if you’re lucky, you may even see it in the wild because testing will officially include public roads starting tomorrow. Cold weather testing will take place later this month in the Arctic Circle and much of 2017 will also be dedicated to real-world development, including a stint in the sweltering Middle East.

Previous teasers and spy photos of Project Cullinan showed a prototype wearing an altered Phantom body. The two new photos from today, however, reveal what appears to be the finalized body shell, which has undeniable SUV proportions. The prototype’s sides are indeed high, and so is its front fascia and ground clearance. A door handle is visible in one of the photos, but it’s not enough to determine if the Cullinan is sporting traditional or Phantom-like suicide doors.

As previously reported, Project Cullinan will debut the automaker’s new aluminum chassis that’ll cut down on weight without sacrificing the tank-like ride one expects from a Rolls. The chassis will trickle down to future Rolls models after Project Cullinan goes into production in 2018.
