If you haven’t ordered your 2017 Dodge Viper yet, you’re about to get one last chance to put in your request for the handcrafted sports car of your dreams.
Because of overwhelming demand and parts related issues, ordering for the legendary Viper was suspended on October 7. However, Fiat Chrysler will resume taking orders for the car’s final production run before the year’s end.
“We actually had to shut down the ordering because we outran our headlights,” Tim Kuniskis, head of Fiat Chrysler-North America, recently told The Detroit News.
“We didn’t know if we were going to have enough parts to build all the cars people ordered,” he said.
Aside from headlights, the extreme aero wings for the 8.4-liter V-10-powered beast were also in short supply, in part because the carbon fiber parts are all hand built for the top-of-the-line and most popular ACR track models.
Kuniskis told the paper that demand for the ACR was “off the charts” and that they are close to reopening the ordering process now that they figured out how many cars they can build.
“They will sell out quickly,” Kuniskis added.
No doubt. A group of special-edition models for the Viper’s 25th Anniversary sold out this summer in record time. A special ACR edition sold out in only 40 minutes. If you have spent any time behind the wheel of one on a track, you’ll understand why.
Since 1992, Dodge and SRT have built nearly 30,000 Vipers in the Motor City. Fans of the car can still build their dream Vipers on the company’s website, but the exact date customers can order one is still up in the air.
“We don’t have a specific date, but we anticipate orders will re-open before the end of the year,” Kristin Starnes, head of Dodge PR, tells us via email.
Until that day comes, you can choose from hundreds of thousands of paint and stripe combinations, 18 interior trims, 11 wheels combinations, and much more on the build site.
Get ready to place that ACR order fast, too. Hopefully Dodge will surprise us with yet another special edition to add to our holiday wish list.
