Kia is teasing something that will debut ahead of the 2017 Detroit auto show, and our guess is it’s the upcoming Kia GT sedan. In the first installment of a video series called “The Curve Ahead,” Kia shows point-of-view footage of a car lapping the Nürburgring. On a microsite with the same name, Kia has a clock counting down to the car’s January 8 debut and shows images of the 2011 GT concept and 2014 GT4 Stinger concept.
We’ve spied prototypes of the Kia GT testing in Germany, so it’s probably a safe bet that’s the car we’ll see in Detroit. The car debuted as a concept at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show, but wasn’t greenlit until 2014. The rear-wheel-drive sedan is expected to offer the same two V-6 engine options found in the Genesis G80 (formerly known as the Hyundai Genesis), but could ride on a new platform shared with the upcoming G70. Those engines include the tried-and-true 3.8-liter Lambda V-6 making 311 hp and 293 lb-ft of torque and a twin-turbo 3.3-liter rated at 365 hp and 376 lb-ft. We’ve also spied a prototype that we think was testing a V-8, possibly a version of the 5.0-liter Tau engine that makes 420 hp and 383 lb-ft in top-trim G80 and G90 models.
We know the car will sport a liftback-style trunk like the Audi A7, though the model should be closer in size to the A5 Sportback and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. We’ve heard the car will start below $30,000 in some markets, but U.S. pricing is still unknown. Check out the teaser video and microsite, and stay tuned as Kia slowly trickles out more details on its Detroit debut.
