Equine Overload: Roush Opens Order Book for Stage 3 Mustang

Stud-Mustang heads rejoice, for the Roush Stage 3 is now available for order at your local Roush emporium. Courtesy of a supercharger, the 5.0-liter engine thwonks out in the neighborhood of 630 horsepower. Roush suggests the final power number could be a smidge higher. Though the company boasts that it produces more horsepower per liter than any other OE musclecar on the market, its final output isn’t in Hellcat territory. Nor is it as wild-hair as the Fisker-Galpin Rocket, which, if you’ll recall, makes 630 horsepower at the wheels. Still, the RS3 a smidge hotter than the 625-horse Petty’s Garage Mustang, which is also available for order at Ford dealers.


But the mighty mill is not the Stage 3’s only trick. Underneath, the buff pony features adjustable coilovers. Track monkeys with a fetish for tweaking can opt for the TrakPak suspension, featuring three-way adjustable coilovers. The RS3 also sports extreme-duty half shafts connecting its independent pumpkin to the wheels. Speaking of wheels, Roush offers three 20” options, including a forged set. All feature UHP Cooper RS3 tires.

As one might expect from a Roush car, the mods aren’t all under the skin. The RS3 receives a front splitter, a hood scoop, a rear deck spoiler, high-flow grille openings, rocker-panel extensions, and a revised rear fascia. Jutting out behind are are quad tips hooked up to Roush’s new Active Performance exhaust system, which offers four noise settings. Touring, Sport, and Track settings ramp up the volume as one might expect. Custom mode allows you to program your own sound map from your smartphone or tablet. Which is supremely geeky, but also kind of rad.


Given the basic Mustang GT’s fundamental goodness, it’s not a stretch to imagine that the hottest Roush will be a barn burner. For $21,995 on top of a Mustang GT’s $33,125 base price, one would hope for some seriously smoky conflagrations.
