Long a fixture on the automotive landscape, vans are rarely given a second thought. Born out of practicality, the vehicle type reached its peak during the custom-van craze of the 1970s. When that fad faded—sniff—it was back to work as usual for the box on wheels. But the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter showed tradesmen that productivity and austere driving dynamics weren’t necessarily intertwined, and other automakers responded by offering up a variety of unique alternatives plucked, in large part, from their European fleets.
