The Tesla Model S has arguably done more than any other car to make electric vehicles trendy and desirable, but it can’t change the reality: For many drivers, the charging infrastructure just can’t support their vehicular needs the way old-fashioned internal combustion can.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says he’s about to change all that.
With a boldness—and lack of detail—that’s become trademark for the much-loved CEO, Musk tweeted over the weekend that his electric car company is about to solve Tesla Model S drivers’ driving-range worries forever:
Tesla press conf at 9am on Thurs. About to end range anxiety … via OTA software update. Affects entire Model S fleet.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 15, 2015
Pretty strong stuff.
It’s hard to read any kind of detail into a purposefully cryptic announcement sent out in a packet that can only carry 140 characters, but two things jump out. First, Musk’s claim that the trick works via over-the-air software update indicates that it’s likely some kind of energy-management tweak, updated battery-status gauge for the dashboard, or other fix. Second, since it affects the “entire Model S fleet,” we know it can’t be a trick that only works for dual-motor all-wheel-drive models.

Our hunch is that, while the new software update will probably give Model S owners a nice little range boost or a more fine-grained data report from the battery room, it’s probably not going to do away entirely with the problem of driving an electric-powered car in a gas-focused world. But that kind of nuance doesn’t fit into a tweet.
