Two Bolts: Chevy Concept Shares Name with Tata Subcompact

Tata Bolt

Tata Bolt

Chevrolet’s choice of the name “Bolt” for its electric concept car that debuted at the Detroit auto show last week seemed curious and a little weird, given that the car would be a sister model to the Volt. But now it turns out that there’s another problem with the name: It’s already taken.

Observers of international markets were instantly reminded of another Bolt, unveiled at the Indian Auto Expo in February 2014 by local carmaker Tata. We know that Tata execs were taken by surprise when word got out about the unfortunately named Chevrolet.

Could it be renamed? Don’t count on Tata forcing a change. “Bolt is currently a brand name registered by Tata Motors for the Indian market and we are in the process of registering it for some of our key international markets as relevant. However, we do not presently anticipate any concerns about the GM vehicle as both of these products are focused on very different markets,” a spokesperson told us today.

Even without the threat of legal action, this could be the perfect excuse for Chevrolet to drop “Bolt” in favor of something better. How about EV-2?
