Vehicles Affected: Approximately 87,000 model-year 2014 Kia Forte vehicles manufactured from Dec. 5, 2012, through April 17, 2014


The Problem: In these vehicles, the cooling fan resistor may overheat and melt; this could cause a fire. Several consumer reports of engine fires prompted the safety investigation but Kia says no related accidents or injuries have been reported.


The Fix: For vehicles produced from Dec. 5, 2012, through Jan. 27, 2014, dealers will replace the cooling fan resistor and multifuse unit for free; for vehicles produced from Jan. 28 to April 17, 2014, dealers will replace the multifuse unit only. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, owners of vehicles with a 1.8-liter engine will also have the engine control unit software updated.
