Bring the ‘Pain: Lamborghini Announces Huracán GT3

Lamborghini Huracán GT3

The Exotic House That Agriculture (and Piëch) Built has been offering its Super Trofeo V-10 cars to gentleman racers since midway through the Gallardo’s run, adding a veneer of motorsport flair to a brand that’s been characterized by F1-snob Maranello-ites as an all-show, no-go concern. Now, less than six months after the unveiling of its Huracán Blancpain Super Trofeo car for its eponymous one-make racing series, Lamborghini has announced the Huracán GT3, a car that will finally put a factory-offered Lambo in direct motorsports competition with Ferrari, following the Reiter-developed Gallardo GT3 FL

Built to FIA GT3 spec and initially set to run in the Blancpain Endurance Series, the racing baby Lambo will take on not just the 458, but its VW Group-mates Bentley, Porsche, and Audi. Other marques in the European five-race series include BMW, Nissan, Aston Martin, and McLaren. That’s a pretty hefty punchbowl.

Lamborghini has enlisted Austria’s Grasser Racing to run the new machines, which are due to be driven by Fabio Babini, Adrian Zaugg, and Mirko Bortolotti. The new cars feature widened, easy-off bodywork and a severe squint. Resplendent in eye-yanking green, they look a bit like venomous toads with an axe to grind. And who isn’t afraid of an axe-wielding toad named after a bull?

Under the Dallara-developed bodywork, the GT3 packs a bigger radiator and a six-speed transaxle repositioned for better weight distribution. Six-pot calipers clamp steel discs in the front, while four-piston units grip the rears. 315-section front and 325-section rear tires put power to the track; an on-board pneumatic lift system gets them off the ground during pit stops.

Although Lamborghini has made no announcements beyond its participation in the Blancpain series, assume the Huracán GT3 is being built with an eye toward other series. If you want in, the asking price is 369,000 euros, which at the moment, translates to $415,974. Do well and perhaps the tifosi will stop snickering.
